New trends will challenge traditional roles
Staying on top of trends affecting graduate medical education is critical-especially when interview season rolls around. Your interviewees are a new generation of physicians-to-be, with a whole new set of expectations for their careers. Keeping that in mind, several physician trends have been developing in recent years, including the imminent departure of baby boomer physicians and the increasing appeal of surgical residencies for women.

SNP Medicare expansion continues
Special needs plans (SNP)-including chronic condition SNPs (C-SNP)-continue their rise in the Medicare market this year, with a growth rate of 60% and the advent of the United States' first such plan developed specifically for beneficiaries with Alzheimer's disease. In late December 2007, CMS announced that it is working with the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) on quality measures for Medicare SNPs, scheduled to be re-leased March 15.

Technology will play bigger role in the future
Technology has changed the way Americans bank and shop, and it continues to change the face of healthcare. Technological advances in disease management (DM) are making it possible for patients to telecommunicate with their doctors, and for physicians to collect health information and change care if warranted.
