A proactive approach to self-disclosure protocols
Not being in compliance with federal healthcare laws and regulations can be costly, even for laboratories. The federal government first administers large fines and penalties that may also result in costly corporate integrity agreements (CIA) and/or certification of compliance agreements (CCA). Ultimately, CMS can exclude or debar an organization from working with federal healthcare programs. Not only do these results affect the financial viability of an organization, but they also affect the reputation of the organization within the community it serves.
 
Secrets to success in processing medical necessity paperwork
A good medical necessity and ABN process starts with common sense and education. Laboratory team members need to know what an ABN is and when a patient's signature is required. The majority of support staff and technical teams are not aware of the importance of this document and that it remains a key component in the revenue cycle.
